A liquidation case, often referred to as a "straight bankruptcy," is filed under Chapter 7.

Reorganization cases, or payment plans wherein individuals or company's restructure debt, are filed as either a Chapter 13 (wage earner reorganization), a Chapter 11 (corporate or sole proprietorship reorganiztion) or a Chapter 12 (family farmer reorganization).
